I am a Professor in the Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University and Director of the National Aquatic Monitoring Center. I have been a member of the SFS/NABS since 1978 and a USU faculty member since 1983. My main professional interests focus on the advancement of interdisciplinary water science in support of more effective watershed and aquatic ecosystem management - including the critical need to effectively communicate scientific knowledge to all stakeholders. My specific research and teaching interests include: how landscape setting, watershed alteration, and climate change affect aquatic biodiversity; use of aquatic biota to assess and monitor ecological integrity; cumulative effects of watershed alteration on aquatic and riparian ecosystems; survey designs and predictive modeling to support local to regional monitoring and assessment, the biology and ecology of freshwater invertebrates, amphibians, and fishes; the philosophy and practice of science; and science communication - especially scientific writing. I work extensively with state and federal water resources agencies to develop scientifically defensible approaches to environmental assessment.
