Marking 25 Years Since Idaho v. U.S.: Reflections and Impact on the Health of Coeur d’Alene Lake (138864)
Coeur d’Alene Lake has been the center of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s homeland since Time Immemorial. In 2001, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the Tribe’s rightful ownership of the beds and banks of its southern waters, supporting the Tribe’s governance and its ability to address over a century of pollution from mining and development across the Basin. Presenters will discuss the cultural, political, social, and environmental relationship of the Tribe to the lake and its tributaries, as well as the limitations of Western environmental law in addressing lake protection and clean-up.
